Legal News for Indiana Product Liability Attorneys. Play Yards with Bassinets recalled due to strangulation or positional asphyxiation danger.

Columbus, Indiana firm recalls portable play yards due to safety hazard.

Columbus, IN—Dorel Juvenile Group Inc. has participated in the voluntary recall of Safety 1st Disney Care Center and Eddie Bauer Complete Care Play Yards with Bassinets due to risks of suffocation and personal asphyxiation, reports the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) http://www.cpsc.gov. The CPSC and Health Canada http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca announced the recall on Wednesday, December 30, 2009.

The Columbus, Indiana-based firm reportedly recalled approximately 213,000 play yards that were manufactured in China. It was stated that an uneven sleeping surface could result if the one-piece metal bars that hold the bassinet attachment’s floorboard in place were to come out of their fabric sleeves, subsequently creating a suffocation and/or positional asphyxiation hazard. Consumers have allegedly reported no injuries in correlation with the recalled product.

These portable play yards reportedly came equipped with a bassinet attachment and built-in changing station. A sticker containing the product model number can be located on one of the support legs underneath the play yard. The models affected by the recall include: 05025, 05026, 05037, 05088, and 05350. The play yards will have either “Safety 1st” or “Eddie Bauer” printed on the fabric portion of the play yards. These play yards were sold by retailers including Babies “R” Us, Kmart, Sears, Target, and Walmart from January 2007 to October 2009 with prices ranging from $100 to $130.

Consumers are urged to stop using the play yard’s bassinet attachment and to contact Dorel Juvenile Group to receive a free repair kit to fix the recalled product.
