As Many as 12 Percent of US Juvenile Inmates Report Being Sexually Abused by Staff & Fellow Inmates
January 8, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ A Justice Department report states that 12% of juvenile prisoners had been raped or sexually abused over the past year. That number in some institutions is as high as 33%.
The Bureau of Justice study, based on surveys from 195 facilities across all US states, also pointed out that there was a “very high rate of staff sexual misconduct.”
Though some prison and government officials say the cost to fix the problem would be substantial, human rights groups and prison reformers say more attention must be paid to prison safety.
