Uganda Shelves Plan to Give Death Penalty to HIV-Positive People Convicted of Gay Sex
January 14, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ Uganda president Yoweri Museveni says his government will bow to international pressure and back away from a controversial bill that would have given the courts the right to hand out the death penalty as punishment for any HIV-positive person convicted of having gay sex.
Although the law had broad domestic support, western donors, who account for a large amount of Uganda’s national budget, have strongly protested the bill – which also proposes that a life prison sentence be given to anyone convicted of having gay sex.
Though this measure has been seemingly defeated by foreign pressure, homosexuality itself is still outlawed in Uganda.
