West Lafayette, IN—A construction accident at Mackey Arena left a worker injured on Tuesday, January 19, 2010. The incident allegedly occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m., according to

An employee of the New Castle, Indiana-based subcontractor Hoosier Steel, reportedly stepped through a hole while pulling metal decking onto the penthouse level of the Mackey Area, subsequently causing him to fall approximately 10 feet to the floor below. The construction worker was allegedly on the fourth floor before he fell to the third in the incident.

Perdue Fire Department crews reportedly responded to the scene where an aerial truck had to be used to transport the worker to the ground. He was allegedly transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center to be treated by doctors and nurses, and then released. The unidentified worker allegedly suffered an arm injury as well and bumps and bruises. A safety director from Hoosier Steel was reportedly conducting preliminary investigations.

According to information provided by the Indiana Department of Labor, 148 workplace fatalities were reported in 2006. Also in 2006, there were 720 reported falls in which workers missed work as a result. A total of 2,940 injuries reported in Indiana caused workers to miss an average of 13 days of work.
