Detroit, MI—A pregnant woman delivered her baby on the highway after being involved in a fatal rollover crash on Tuesday, January 26, 2010. The violent wreck occurred on Interstate 94 before noon, according to information provided by the Detroit Free Press.

A male driver, identified as Shardae Homesly’s fiancé, 23, was reportedly traveling west in the far-right lane of I-94 in a 2002 Jeep Liberty compact SUV when he was cut off by a blue van on the freeway. The SUV allegedly veered off to avoid a collision, subsequently striking a pole on the right shoulder, which then caused the vehicle to overturn several times. Homesly was reportedly ejected from the vehicle, delivering her baby upon impact of the crash. Michigan State Police (MSP) reported that the 7-month-pregnant passenger was not wearing a seat belt at the time.

The severely injured mother and a newborn baby boy were transported to St. John’s Hospital, where there injuries proved fatal upon their arrival. The driver of the vehicle, whose name has not been disclosed, was reported wearing a seat belt at the time and only suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Michigan State Police troopers are allegedly seeking information from about the blue van involved from the public. Accident investigators reportedly also noted that the driver of the van might be unaware that a crash even occurred because it never made direct contact with the SUV.
