WellPoint Ready to Raise Premiums if Forced to Insure Pre-Existing Conditions
January 28, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ WellPoint CEO Angela Braly says the company will raise the cost of their premiums if Congress forces the company to cover people with pre-existing conditions.
Braly told Bloomberg News that increases will come when selectivity is eliminated. “Without an effective responsibility for everyone to be in the pool” costs will rise, she is quoted as saying, adding that people should be forced to buy insurance if companies are not allowed to discriminate based on pre-existing conditions. If people aren’t forced to be insured, they simply would buy insurance when they get sick.
Recent polls have suggested that, regardless of the overall problems people may have with health care proposals being debated, people like the angle of forcing insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions. A recent poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 63% of people are more likely to support legislation if insurance companies could not hold pre-existing conditions against people.
