Illinois train accident lawyer alerts- car crashed into Metra train; one dead.

Des Plaines, IL (News)—One person was fatally injured in a collision involving a Metra train and a car on Tuesday night, February 9, 2010. The train-car crash also left one person injured after the incident, which occurred in northwest Des Plains, Illinois, according to information provided by the Chicago Sun-Times.

A Metra spokesperson allegedly reported the locomotive traveling northwest en route to Crystal Lake before colliding with a car at the Des Plaines train station, which is located on River Road. The 8:05 p.m. train-vehicle crash seemingly caused the two women traveling in the car to suffer serious injuries. Emergency medical services (EMS) crews transported the crash victims to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital where one woman, identified as 68-year-old Mary Cannon, was unfortunately pronounced dead at 9:10 p.m. The vehicles second occupant, whose identity was undisclosed by authorities, was reported still receiving treatment by responding medical professionals at 10 p.m. Tuesday night, at the time time as the Metra train service was resumed. The cause of the accident is still unknown though investigations are expected to be underway.

According to information provided by Illinois Operation Lifesaver through the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC), approximately 80 people are fatally injured on or near railroad tracks and locomotives annually. It was reported that nearly 50 percent of all train-car collisions occur when warning devices, including lights, gates, sirens, etc., are active. Also, victims involved in train-car collisions as opposed to motor vehicle collisions (MVC) are 40 percent more likely to suffer fatal injuries.
