Product liability lawyer alerts- Fire hazard posed by commercial ice machines prompts product recall, CPSC announces.

Vernon Hills, IL (News)—Scotsman Group LLC has participated in the voluntary recall of approximately 43,000 Scotsman® Commercial Modular Cube Ice Machines due to the fire threat they pose to consumers. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) http://www.cpsc.gov announced the recall on Thursday, February 25, 2010.

According to the CPSC, “The solenoid, an electrical component in the product, can fail and result in an electrical arc that can pose a fire hazard.” Though no injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled ice machines, the firm has allegedly received four reports of fires and 37 reports of components melting or burning. The model numbers included in the recall reportedly begin with C0322, C0330, C0522, C0530, C0630, C0830, C1030, C1448, C1848, C2148, EH130, EH222, EH330, or EH430 while the products’ serial numbers begin with 05, 06, 07, 08 or 09. These product model and serial numbers can be located on the back of all recalled ice machines. It was also reported that Scotsman® commercial flake and nugget ice machines, commercial undercounter cube ice machines, and residential ice machines are not affected by the product recall.

Food service equipment distributors throughout the nation sold these particular ice machines, created for use in commercial institutions, from September 2006 to December 2009. Their prices allegedly varied from $4,000 to $14,000. Consumers have been urged to stop using the recalled ice machines and contact Scotsman at (800) 541-0520 Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. to schedule a complimentary repair. The firm can also be contacted online at www.scotsman-ice.com.
