Group Asks FDA to Look Into Pharmaceutical Online Ad-Targeting Techniques

March 2, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ The FDA is currently examining pharmaceutical companies’ marketing techniques in the online and social media spaces, and one group wants the agency to look into whether online pharmaceutical marketing is violating user privacy.

The Center for Digital Democracy filed a brief with the FDA asking the agency to examine data collection practices and require companies that use behavioral targeting to spell out their methods. In addition to the marketing arms of the pharmaceutical companies, the group wants the FDA to probe several web publishers that focus on health.

Although online advertising supporters say that behavioral targeting doesn’t violate people’s privacy because the information collected is not personally identifiable, the Federal Trade Commission recently reported that even this type of information could be used to identify specific users.
