Legal News for Product Liability Attorneys. Potentially hazardous hydrolyzed vegetable protein prompts recall of certain Publix seasoning mixes.

Product liability attorney alerts- Possible Salmonella contamination in vegetable protein led to product recall of Publix seasoning mixes; no foodborne illnesses reported.

Lakeland, FL (News)—In yet another product recall stemming from potential Salmonella contamination of hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP), Publix Super Markets Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) http://www.fda.gov, has recalled four different typed of seasoning mixes due to the possible health hazard they may pose to consumers. Justice News Flash received notification of the product recall through information provided by the Orlando Business Journal.

Las Vegas, Nevada-based Basic Food Flavors, supplied many manufacturers including Publix, with the vegetable protein, which may have been contaminated with Salmonella. Although Publix has yet to receive any consumer illness reports, the seasoning mixes contain HVP and were seemingly recalled as a safety precaution. The products affected by the recall include the following:

• Publix Mushroom Gravy Mix

0.75 oz. packages

UPC #41415 03308

• Publix Meatloaf Seasoning

1 oz. packages

UPC #41415 03408

• Publix Beef Flavored Stew Mix

1.45 oz. packages

UPC #41415 03608

• Publix Au Jus Gravy Mix

1 oz. packages

UPC #41415 04208

The FDA noted that, “Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”

Consumers should contact the Publix consumer relations department by phone at (800) 242-1227 or online at www.publix.com for more information regarding the recall.
