Virginia Senate Votes Down Asbestos Lawsuit Shield
March 9, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ A proposal that would have shielded a company from asbestos lawsuits in Virginia was easily defeated in a state Senate committee by a vote of 13-2.
Bill HB 629, which would have shielded Crown Cork & Seal from asbestos lawsuits, had passed through the House of Delegates in February but ran into a brick wall in Senate committee. Crown Cork employs more than 300 people in Virginia, and the company said it would have to close its factories in Virginia if the bill did not pass.
Crown Cork has been named in more than 300,000 asbestos claims and has paid $600 million in expenses, The Washington Post reports. The paper also reports that Crown Cork has spent more than $100,000 on lobbyists since 2007 and donated more than $100,000 to 46 Virginia legislators or their political action committees.
