California Highway Patrol alerts DUI attorneys— Marina man charged with driving under the influence following crash with a Monterey Police vehicle.
Monterey, CA— A drunk driver slammed head-on into a Monterey patrol car, injuring two police officers on Thursday, March 25, 2010. The impaired driver was headed eastbound on Fremont Street toward the Abrego Street intersection, when he collided head-on around 1:00 a.m., as reported by the Monterey Herald.
Officers arrested Cory Overton, 21, of Marina who was charged with two felony counts, which included causing injury while driving impaired and driving under the influence (DUI). The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported Overton was driving his 2000 Dodge Dakota eastbound on Fremont Street when he crossed the double yellow lines and slammed into the oncoming police car. Another police vehicle traveling ahead of the struck car had to swerve to avoid a crash with Overton as well.
Monterey Police officials identified the two injured police officers as Sgt. Wendy Birks and officer Amy Carrizosa. They were rushed to an area hospital for treatment of upper back, neck and head pains, and were both released before dawn.
The CHP stated the charges are not enhanced for injuring law enforcement officers. The CHP investigated the crash to avoid a potential conflict of interest.
