April 19, 2010 – The passenger airline business isn’t the only industry feeling the heat from the volcano eruption in Iceland. The shipping industry also finds itself caught in the ash cloud, looking for a way out.
With cargo planes unable to carry freight and warehouses running out of room, air shipping companies are caught between waiting out the cloud and flying to areas outside the cloud, then ground-shipping the cargo to mainland Europe.
Lufthansa Cargo was granted exceptions to fly three freight flights out of Frankfurt, Germany on Monday. Meanwhile, UPS has temporarily relocated its parcel hub from Cologne, Germany to Istanbul, Turkey.
