April 20, 2010 – The World Health Organization says that the volcanic ash being spewed from Iceland poses no health risk to people in mainland Europe — at least at this point.
Backing off its Friday early warning that the ash cloud could be “very dangerous,” the WHO said the ash particles remain high in the atmosphere and pose no immediate threat to those who suffer from respiratory ailments.
However, if the ash does not get washed away by rain, the possibility still exists that the particles could descend to ground level and pose a health risk.
