The state’s governor recently signed a bill into law that some fear will open the door to civil rights abuses.

Phoenix, Arizona (WiredPRNews.com) – The governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer, has signed a bill into law that many fear could open the door for civil rights abuses in the state. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the bill gives more authority to police when dealing with illegal immigration, making being in the U.S. illegally a state crime and requiring local officers to question the immigration status of people they suspect may be illegal.

Brewer is quoted by the AP as stating of the legislation, “We in Arizona have been more than patient waiting for Washington to act…But decades of inaction and misguided policy have created a dangerous and unacceptable situation.”

Obama is stated in the report to have called the measure “misguided” and has reportedly ordered an investigation by the Department of Justice to examine its legal merits. The President called for national immigration reform on Friday.
