April 29, 2010 – The volcanic ash that grounded around 100,000 flights over Europe will cost EU airline industry as much as €2.5 billion, according to Siim Kallas, the EU Transport Commissioner.
To help airlines attempt to recoup some of these losses, Kallas said at a news briefing that governments would be able to waive current restrictions on night flights and defer air traffic controller charges.
Kallas also said Europe needs to accelerate its common airspace project, which will streamline the 27 national airspaces to just nine by 2012.
