April 29, 2010 – Wednesday the Supreme Court heard arguments about whether the names of people signing a petition should be kept private or if those names should be a matter of public record.
The case centers on a petition circulated in Washington state that sought to overturn the state’s partnership rights law. Opponents of the gay rights legislation argued that if the names of those who signed the petition became public, those people would be subject to harassment from gay rights groups.
Media organizations filed a brief supporting public disclosure of the documents in an attempt to keep the political process as transparent as possible.
