San Francisco, CA—Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a voluntary recall in cooperation with Gap Inc. About 6,500 baby swimsuits were recalled in the U.S. and about 480 were recalled in Canada over strangulation hazards, as reported by the CPSC on April 30, 2010.

Gap recalled the swimsuits after discovering that the bathing suit halter straps were made too short, causing the plastic ring on the neck of the swimsuit to push against the child’s throat and obstruct their airway, posing a strangulation hazard.

At this time Gap has received two consumer complaints regarding the recalled clothing, but no injuries have been reported.

The CPSC stated, “The baby swimsuits were sold in two styles: number 706260 is blue and white and number 700452 is red and white. The style number can be found on the label located on the swimsuit. Both swimsuits were sold in infant sizes up to 24 months and are made of a synthetic knit stretch fabric of polyester and spandex. The straps are made of the same material as the body.”

The recalled bathing suits were sold at The babyGap, GapKids, Gap, Gap Outlet stores nationwide and online at www.gap.com. The bathing suits were sold from February 2010 through April 2010 for between $17 and $20.

Consumers are advised to return the swimsuits to the place of purchase to receive a full refund. If the swimsuit was purchase online, contact Gap to return by mail. For further information, consumers can contact Gap toll-free at (888) 747-3704 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, and Saturday between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m., visit their Web site at www.gap.com or email Gap at [email protected]
