Buffalo, NY– A Silver Springs man was killed early Monday, May 3, 2010, when a section of earthen embankment collapsed, trapping him underneath the dirt. The construction worker was reportedly putting in a basement on a Town of Holland home, when the accident occurred around 12:16 p.m., as reported by Buffalo News.
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office reported, Brandon Acker, 34, was working at a home located at 13045 Hawks Hill Road when the fatal accident occurred. Acker, who was employed by Fisher Concrete in Java Center, was working alongside other employees while installing a basement underneath the home. Suddenly, a 15-by-18 foot section of the earth bank collapsed, pinning Acker underneath the loose dirt. His co-workers immediately began digging away the dirt in a desperate attempt to save him. By the time rescue teams arrived at the scene, Acker’s co-workers managed to pull him out from underneath the dirt.
Mercy Flight rushed Acker to Erie County Medical Center, where his injuries proved fatal and he was pronounced dead. No one else was reportedly injured in the collapse.
The U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and the Erie County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a full investigation into the fatal construction accident.
