Chicago, IL—A Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus slammed into an unoccupied school building on Monday, May 10, 2010. The bus crash occurred as the city vehicle attempted to avoid a separate accident with a sport utility vehicle. A total of twelve people were injured in the West Side wreck, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.

According to CTA spokesperson Wanda Taylor, “A westbound No. 66 (Chicago Avenue) bus was involved in a collision with a car that resulted in the bus striking the building.”

The accident occurred at approximately 4:05 p.m. in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. A 74-year-old SUV driver was reportedly following a slow-moving car when he became fed up. The driver, James Vaughn, subsequently sped up into the same lane as a CTA bus was traveling in.

Upon doing so, the bus steered away from the SUV to avoid a collision. According to 45-year-old witness Richie Driver, “The bus driver tried to keep from hitting him, and she (the bus driver) wound up hitting another car.” The bus then veered off the roadway and slammed into the Rowe-Clark Math and Science Academy.

There were 13 people occupying the bus at the time, 12 of which were passengers. An EMS Plan II was subsequently deployed. In effect, at least 10 ambulances arrived on the 3600 block of West Chicago Avenue.

A total of 12 injured crash victims were transported to area hospitals. Two of those 12 reportedly suffered critical injuries and were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital.

Vaughn reportedly tried to leave the scene after the accident but had to pull over due to obvious radiator damage. The SUV driver was consequently ticketed for following to close.
