Nashville, TN—A fatal workplace accident at a Waste Management plant left a worker dead after he apparently fell into trash truck. The worker was killed around 9:30 p.m., on Monday, May 10, 2010 at the plant on Franklin Limestone Road in Antioch, as reported by WSMV.

Officials reported that the worker was crushed under two tons of trash, after the man fell into a pile of waste. Police believe the man was standing near a large pile of trash when he reportedly got caught in front of bulldozer, which compacts trash into trailers.

Authorities at the plant stated that “on the plant’s trash floor, semi-trucks with open tops pull up and trash is loaded into the trucks.” Other workers were not aware of the accident until sometime later when they realized one of the workers was missing. The employees called the trucks back, and dumped out all the trash, and began digging through the waste. About 10:00 p.m., his body was found. Police believe he may have died from suffocation.

An autopsy would be performed to determine the exact cause of death. Police are withholding the man’s identity.

Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) is expected to conduct an investigation into the fatal workplace accident.
