Spartanburg, SC—BMW’s new assembly facility in Spartanburg County was the site of an accident, which caused one worker to loose an arm. A worker reportedly severed his arm around 10:00 a.m., after hitting a door frame while driving a forklift at a construction site at the BMW in Greer, as reported by GoUpstate.com.

The worker, who was not identified, is a subcontractor for a plumbing firm. He was reportedly driving a Lull forklift through a doorway, when his arm hit the vertical I-beam, which caused his arm to be severed between the elbow and wrist.

The worker was airlifted by helicopter to Greenville Memorial Hospital within 30 minutes of the accident taking place. Thankfully, doctors were able to reattach his arm, but he has a long road to recovery ahead of him. Doctors say he will need several more surgeries. So far, his arm has regained blood flow, a positive sign that the operation was successful.

Bobby Hitt, a BMW Spokesperson stated, “I don’t remember an accident like this at our facility. We’ve had medical emergencies, but most of those were from pre-existing health conditions. All BMW associates wish him and his family well.”

Both BMW and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the accident.
