Streetsboro, OH—Step2 Company, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada (HC), has recalled approximately 2.5 million Push Around and Whisper Ride Buggies. The children’s ride-on toys were recalled due to the injury hazard they pose. The CPSC announced the product safety recall on Wednesday, May 12, 2010.

According to the CPSC, “A pin attaching to the yellow knob on the handle of the buggy can loosen, causing the handle to detach from the buggy. This poses a serious risk of injury to young children… The firm has received 28 reports of the handle detaching; two incidents required professional medical treatment and 26 resulted in minor scrapes and scratches.”

The Step2® Push Around Buggy™ and Step2® Whisper Ride Buggy™, which have yellow knobs, are the only ride-on toys affected by the recall. The buggies were sold in orange, red, blue, pink and green. They red “Step2®” logo is affixed on the handle of the defective buggies.

The hazardous children’s ride-on toys were produced in the United States but sold in Canada as well. Major retailers and specialty stores sold the risky toys from August 1999 through March 2010. Prices ranged from $29 to $59.

Consumers have been urged to seize the recalled buggies and contact Step2 to receive a complimentary repair kit. Step2 can be reached toll-free at (866) 860-1887 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET or on the company’s Web site at www.Step2.com.
