Boone, IA—A multiple fatality crash involving an ambulance and a semi-truck left two people dead and two others injured on Thursday, May 13, 2010. The ambulance was transporting a patient in critical condition from the St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll to a Des Moines Hospital, when the emergency vehicle rear-ended the semi on Highway 30 around 11:26 a.m., as reported by KCCI.

Boone County Deputy Brian Pontius stated, “The semi driver was going to make a turn… He checked his mirrors to make that turn. He realized the ambulance was behind him running red lights and pulled to the right. The unfortunate part was the ambulance saw the semi and he also pulled to the right and they hit each other. The ambulance hit the back of the semi.” As a result, the vehicles rolled down the highway, leaving the engine compartment of the ambulance completely crushed.

The wreck left the patient that the ambulance was transporting, Norbert Hoffman, 75, of Carroll, and a nurse, Sheryl Stoolman, 53, dead.

Paramedic Wendy Baker, 45, of Carroll and ambulance driver, Robert Genzen, 46, of Manning, were injured. Genzen was reportedly flown to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines by air ambulance for treatment. Baker is reportedly being treated at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson.

The driver of the semi, Dennis Good, 49, of Ogden, did not sustain any serious injuries.

Deputy Pontius reported, “In an ambulance situation, the personnel in the back don’t wear seat belts because they were attending to a patient.” Stoolman reportedly volunteered to ride with the patient to the hospital when the accident occurred.

Iowa State Patrol is expected to conduct an investigation into the wreck.
