Mims, FL—An accident involving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) left three girls seriously injured. The accident occurred Tuesday, May 11, 2010 in Mims, Florida, according to information provided by FloridaToday.com.

Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) officials reported 12-year-old Desiree Curley operating the ATV at 6:20 p.m., when the accident occurred. As the four wheeler was rounding a curve on Huntington Drive, Curley reportedly lost control.

As a result, the 2005 Suzuki KingQuad ATV slammed into a culvert in a ditch along the road. On impact, Curley and her two passengers, 11-year-old Cheyanne Lovell and 17-year-old April Hebert, were ejected. None of the young girls riding the ATV were wearing helmets at the time.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel were dispatched to the scene to transport the three girls to area hospitals for treatment. Curley and Herbert were allegedly taken to Parrish Medical Center to be treated by doctors and nurses. Lovell, on the other hand, was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children via medical helicopter.

Officials did not specify the extent of the victims’ injuries. However, FHP spokesperson Kim Montes noted their injuries were not considered to be life threatening. Montes also noted the owner of the ATV, also the mother of one of the injured crash victims, “didn’t know the girls had taken it out”.

Though it is against the law to operate an ATV on a public roadway in Florida, charges were not expected. According to Montes, “They were lucky their injuries weren’t worse… They’ve learned a lesson the hard way.”
