Lexington, VA—Approximately 30 individuals suffered non life-threatening injuries after a deck collapsed during a party. The incident occurred in an off-campus house near Washington & Lee University (WLU). Rescue personnel were notified of the accident at approximately 11:20 p.m. Friday, May 14, 2010, according to WSLS.com.

According to WLU freshman Tilden Bowditch, “I was on the porch for a little bit. It was hard to move kind of, but it wasn’t packed. I have seen it worse. The party was starting to get going, and there were a lot of people inside and out.”

Bowditch reportedly left the party to visit her friend’s house across the street when she heard the commotion. “I just heard a big crack. I heard yelling, but it did not sound like stressed yelling, or anyone was crying out in pain or anything like that… We saw something sticking out, and it turned out to be the porch railing. We saw people crowding over there, and heard sirens”, Bowditch explained.

Rescue teams arrived at the scene, located at the corner of Greenhouse and Furrs Mill Road, to assess the situation. A total of eight people were transported to the hospital for treatment. At least 14 others allegedly reported to area hospitals but did not require ambulance transport. Several others also reportedly sought out treatment at the WLU health center.

WLU spokesperson Jeff Hanna noted none of the injuries were life-threatening. He also reported that all individuals hurt in the deck collapse, with the exception of one person, were treated and released. That person allegedly sustained a compound ankle fracture and was expected to undergo surgery on Saturday.

The deck was approximately 10 feet high. The cause of the collapse was not known.
