May 19, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ — France took another step toward banning Muslim veils today when the nation’s justice minister presented a bill to make such face coverings illegal. The measure, which seems certain to become law, would impose stiff fines and prison terms for those who wear burqas in public.
The proposed burqa restriction is another in a series of efforts by France to force its Muslim population of about 5 million into the French mainstream. It’s estimated that only 1,900 Muslim women in France cover their faces with veils.
