Manhattan, NY—With the closure of St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan announced, hundreds of medical malpractice claims may be threatened. There are over 260 victims suing the hospital in cases related to injuries and deaths at the medical center, as reported by the New York Daily News on Thursday, May 13, 2010.

Plagued by a $1 billion dept, hospital officials voted to close St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan last month. The hospital has since filed for bankruptcy, thus leaving hundreds of medical malpractice lawsuits at a standstill.

An attorney stated, “This is a second nightmare for those families, who have already suffered at the hands of negligent physicians at St. Vincent’s Hospital.” That particular lawyer works with a firm that filed six lawsuits against the hospital.

New Yorkers who were direct victims of medical malpractice, or whose family members suffered from such neglect, filed an array of claims. The cases cover instances in which infants suffered brain damage during delivery to excruciating bedsores acquired during hospitalization.

Some medical malpractice trials have commenced while others have been settled or ruled on. Consequently, plaintiffs in these cases may never obtain the justice and damages they deserve.

Since money kept in hospital’s trust fund will allegedly and primarily pay off creditors, victims may be left without rightful compensation. Hospital authorities did not disclose how much money is the trust.

St. Vincent’s spokesperson Michael Fagan noted that hospital officials are evaluating the said claims.
