San Antonio, TX—Police officials are trying to figure out how a baby made its way into the middle of a busy Texas road. Thankfully, an alert San Antonio bus driver spotted the 14-month-old baby before someone accidentally hit the child, as reported by Fox10TV and NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.

The driver of the San Antonio bus, Mike Hubbard, spotted the child just after midnight in May of last year. Hubbard stopped the bus and ran out to get the baby.

Hubbard stated, “From a distance I can’t tell exactly what it is. It looks like a dog, something moving around, I can’t really tell what it was. I started slowing down and then I noticed it’s a baby in the middle of the street.”

Child Protective Services were called in to investigate the frightening incident. The parents of now 2-year-old Destiny Flores are fighting to keep custody of their three children.

Catherine Gonalez, Destiny’s mother, says it was all an accident.

“It was an accident, that’s all it was. It could happen to anybody in the world, you know? It was just an accident, that’s all it was. It’s not like we weren’t paying attention, you know? I could have swore all my kids were in the back watching TV and they were doing fine. It was just the biggest accident and it hurts me.”

Gonzales stated that her and the Destiny’s father were “in the living room when they heard the bus’s brakes and horn and they had no idea how Destiny got out that night.” The child’s father reportedly realized the baby was gone and ran outside and into the street. He grabbed Destiny without muttering a word and ran back into their home.

A hearing in a few weeks will determine the custody of the three children.
