Minneapolis, MN—Woven storage trunks have been recalled by the importer, Target Corp., and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) over a strangulation hazard the trunks pose to small children. The CPSC announced the recall on May 20, 2010, which advised consumers to stop using the products immediately.
Nearly 350,000 woven storage trunks were recalled after discovering the lid of the trunk can suddenly close when released, which poses a hazard to young children who may be opening or reaching into the trunks.
Two cases of injures have been reported to the CPSC, which occurred when the lids of the trunk suddenly closed on a child. One report included an instance where an 18-month-old suffered brain damaged when the lid closed on the back of the child’s neck, which pinned her throat again the rim of the trunk.
Fourteen different models of the storage trunk made of woven rattan, abaca or banana leaf with standard hinges are involved in the recall. The trunks measure over 1.1 feet in length, width and depth and are a brown or natural color.
The recalled trucks were sold at Target stores nationwide and through their website at www.target.com. The trunks were sold from February 2009 through April 2010 for between $50 and $130.
Consumers can return the trunks to any Target to received a full refund or replacement trunk.
