Oakland, CA—An Alameda-Contra Costa Transit (AC) bus killed a bicyclist when it hit and ran over the cyclist on May 19, 2010. The bicyclist was trying to avoid a collision when he was hit around 4:30 p.m., on MacArthur Boulevard near Patterson Avenue in Oakland, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Both the cyclist and the bus were reportedly traveling in the same direction, when the cyclist quickly swerved to avoid an opening car door. The cyclist inadvertently slammed into the door and ricocheted into traffic. The bus, which was on the NX line, ran him over.

The Oakland Police Department stated that a responding ambulance rushed the cyclist, who was identified as Erik Fitzpatrick, 35, to an area hospital for treatment. Fitzpatrick was sadly pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital.

The AC bus continued to drive about a block, not realizing they had ran someone over, until she was told that the cyclist was down.

The veteran bus driver will undergo drug and alcohol testing, as required by company policy. Officials say it didn’t not appear substance use was a factor.

No one on the bus was reportedly injured in the accident.

A full investigation is underway.
