Detroit, MI—A tragic accident aboard a school bus resulted in the death of a fifth grader. The deadly incident, in which a tree branch struck the young girl when she stuck her head out the window to wave to a friend, occurred on Thursday, May 20, 2010. Officials from the Detroit Police Department and Michigan State Police (MSP) are investigating, as reported by ClickOnDetroit.com.

Tiffany Lynn Ross-DiCicco, 11, was apparently waving to a friend when the unthinkable occurred. “She stuck her head out the window and she said, ‘Christianna’, and then I turned around, and then her face hit the tree,” recalls Christianna Garcia.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel seemingly arrived at the scene to transport injured Ross-DiCicco to Children’s Hospital. However, she did not make it. The young Phoenix Multi-Cultural Academy student succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

According to Detroit Public Schools Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb, “This represents another sad day for the Detroit Public Schools… If I count up the last few weeks, in one 10-day period we’ve had four Detroit Public School students pass. This represents the fifth… There’s not a whole lot one can say to the parents when they bring their children to our schools and expect that at the end of the day their children will return safely.”

On Thursday evening, Ross-DiCicco’s family held a vigil in remembrance her. Ross-DiCicco’s aunt, Paula Wallace, stated, “She’s just very smart, and she loved her music. (She was on the) honor roll, she loved her teachers, and Twilight (books and movies). Yeah, she was Twilight-crazy.”

A full probe into the fatal accident was expected to be underway.
