Los Angeles, CA—Miley Cyrus- brand necklaces and bracelets are being pulled from Wal-Mart stores after The Associated Press tested the jewelry, which found high levels of a toxic metal, cadmium. Wal-Mart announced the recall on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, as reported by MSNBC.

Designer and jewelry developer Max Azria, Cryus, and Wal-Mart issued a statement together, stating that they would remove the jewelry from shelves, which was made exclusively for the retailer. The statement was made just three hours after the AP announced their findings.

Back in February, Wal-Mart initially learned about the presence of cadmium in the Miley Cyrus jewelry, but continued to sell the items. AP found cadmium in both the “Hannah Montana” star’s jewelry and in an unrelated line of bracelet charms.

Wal-Mart did not reveal if they plan to remove the toxic bracelet charms as well. The charms, which were developed exclusively for the retailer, were sold under the name “Fashion Accessories.”

While it is unknown how long the toxic charms have been on store shelves, the Miley Cyrus line has been sold since December.

Exposure to cadmium over a long period of time can result in bone softening and kidney failure. Cadmium is also a known carcinogen. In the very young, cadmium can hinder brain development.

Although cadmium is not known to be dangerous if the jewelry is only worn, concerns are raised when young children bite or suck on the jewelry.

Last month Wal-Mart implemented a new policy, which would require suppliers to prove that their products contain little cadmium, or otherwise the products wouldn’t be accepted by Wal-Mart. “We are removing all of the jewelry from sale while we investigate its compliance with out children’s jewelry standard,” said Wal-Mart.
