Los Angeles, CA—Six people were hospitalized due to serious injuries suffered aboard a United Airlines flight, which encountered severe turbulence en route to Los Angeles from London. The plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Montreal, Canada on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 as a result, as reported by KABC.

Reports indicated there were approximately 200 people aboard a Boeing 777 when it experienced harsh turbulence as it flew above the Atlantic Ocean. The plane initially departed from London’s Heathrow Airport and was scheduled to land at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

When the turbulence initially hit the United Airlines jet, the seat belt sign was apparently inactive. As a result, several individuals sustained injuries including broken ribs and other fractures. The aircraft was forced into making an emergency landing at the nearest airport, Trudeau International Airport in Montreal, Canada.

Ambulances and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel awaited the Boeing on the tarmac of the Montreal airport. Six passengers were rushed to area hospitals while it seems there may have been a few others treated at the scene.

Those who escaped injury during the in-flight disturbance were shaken and provided several descriptions of the incident.

According to passenger Hayley Prickett, “There were three big jumps. I was sitting one row behind the bathroom and I saw a woman fall and she twisted her ankle.”

Passenger Richard Wall noted, “I felt like the plane was hit by a bus. One of the stewardesses spilled coffee all over and burned herself badly.”

An L.A.-based plastic surgeon, identified as Dr. Semira Bayati, was also onboard the airliner at the time and provided aid to several injured passengers. Dr. Bayati, who helped provided initial treatment to a flight attendant who broke her leg, stated, “She was shivering, and she was loosing a lot of blood.”

Though the bumpy plane ride left many people shaken and in some instances, injured, all arrived safely at LAX Tuesday night.
