Minneapolis, MN—A swarm of bees took over an accident scene along I-35, when a semi slammed into stopped traffic. Two people were tragically killed as a result of the multiple-vehicle collision that occurred on May 24, 2010 around 11:30 a.m., as reported by the Examiner.

Minnesota State Police reported that a semi and two passenger cars were stopped in the right lane of I-35 near County Road in Lakeville, when another semi failed to stop in time, slamming into the back of the chain of vehicles. The first semi was reportedly hauling over 17 million bees, which were released during the accident. The crash caused the bees to swarm, giving first responders a whole new problem to deal with.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was airlifted to an area hospital in critical condition. That victim tragically died Monday night after succumbing to their injuries.

Rescue teams first tried to use hoses to control the angry bees, but their efforts were not successful. Bauer Honey representatives arrived at the scene to get the bee situation under control. It was estimated that 150 of the 800 bee colonies were lost in the crash.

Officials reported that at least one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.
