New York, NY—S. Rothschild & Company Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily recalled approximately 13,500 girls’ coats. The CPSC announced the product safety recall on Thursday May 27, 2010 due to the strangulation hazards they may pose to children.

New York-based S. Rothschild & Co. issued the safety recall after it was discovered that the strings on the detachable cape of the coats pose strangulation risks to young girls.

Safety provisions concerning the use of drawstrings in children’s clothing were incorporated into an industry voluntary standard in 1997 to prevent such risks. The company has not received any reports of injuries in connection with the recalled girls’ coats as of yet.

According to the CPSC, “This recall involves S. Rothschild girls’ wool coats with a detachable cape. The coats were sold in pink, red, blue and vanilla with a faux fur cape and in charcoal and vanilla with a faux fur trimmed cape. Two faux pompoms are attached to the end of strings that hang from the cape. The sewn-in neck tag reads, “ROTHSCHILD SINCE 1881.”

Sizes and style numbers affected by the defective product recall include the following:

• Sizes: Infant to 4T

Style Numbers: 36321, 37321, W37321, 38321M

• Sizes: 4 to 6X

Style Numbers: 56321. 56321F, 56321Y, 57321, 57321F, W57321, 58321M

• Sizes: 7 to 16

Style Numbers: 76321, 77321, 78321M

The potentially dangerous girls’ coats were manufactured in Guatemala and sold at Burlington Coat Factory, Famous Barr, Filene’s Basement, Parisian and other retail stores nationwide. They were available for purchase between September 2006 and September 2009, with prices ranging from $70 to $100.

Consumers have been urged to either remove the strings from the cape or remove the cape, which will eliminate the hazard completely, or return the cape to S. Rothschild for a complimentary repair.

For additional information regarding the recall, consumers may contact S. Rothschild at (800) 223-2664 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or visit the company’s Web site at www.SRothschild.com.
