Pompano Beach, FL—After an atheist teacher claimed two self-proclaimed Christians poured “holy water” on her during class, the accused teachers were placed into administrative roles pending a full probe into the allegations. The incident occurred on March 11, 2010 at Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach. Nearly two months later, the case remains under investigation, as reported by ABC News.

According to the attorney representing the two accused teachers, Leslie Rainer and Djuna Robinson, “The allegation that Ms. Robinson threw holy water on anyone is absolutely false.”

On March 11, students were participating in a classroom discussion concerning the earthquake in Haiti. At some point during the class, the topic of conversation veered towards religion.

During the conversation, one student apparently stated that Ms. Schandra Rodriguez (the teacher who filed the complaint) was an atheist. In response to the student’s comment, Rodriguez allegedly stated, “I don’t deny that.”

Rainer and Robinson’s lawyer reported, “Then some of the students started saying that, ‘It looks like someone needs to sprinkle Ms. Rodriguez with some holy water.’” Robinson then allegedly walked into the classroom, with Rainer already present, carrying a small bottle of perfume.

“Ms. Robinson obtained a little bottle with some perfume in it in jest, and the students will all confirm she never went to close to Miss Rodriguez… Ms. Rodriguez was on the other side of the classroom and that was basically it,” the lawyer stated.

The attorney also added that had such an incident occurred, it seems the three teachers would have refrained from sitting together for lunch later on that day.

Broward County School District spokesperson Marsy Smith stated, “The two teachers have been administratively reassigned pending the outcome of the investigation… They’ve been assigned to a different function within the county but away from students.”

Ms. Rodriguez could not be reached for comment.
