Brainerd, MN—A game called “sack tapping” landed 14-year-old David Gibbons on the operating table after a classmate punched him in his groin, resulting in a ruptured testicle. This is just one case out of the many, which some are saying is a growing epidemic, as reported by KARE11.
Christy Gibbons, David’s mother, stated “At one o’clock in the morning he woke me up and told me he was in excruciating pain. Not long after, David was in surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Brainerd having his right testicle removed.”
A Brainerd urologist, Dr. Scott Wheeler told reporters “It’s just gotten way out of control.” Wheeler says he performs “three to four surgeries a year” on boys who have ruptured testicles, or for other issues that have resulted from being punched in their private area.
David has since been pulled out of Crosby Ironton High School, because of prior, similar attacks.
The name of the student who allegedly punched David is being withheld due to privacy reasons. The Gibbon’s are planning to meet with a lawyer to determine if any criminal charges will be filed for the incident.
Doctors did say that David should still be able to have children someday, even though one testicle was removed.
The investigation into the incident has been completed, according to Jamie Skjeveland, superintendent of Crosby Ironton schools.
