Boston, MA—A jet carrying 258 people was forced to make an emergency landing after one of the plane’s engines ignited shortly after departure. The incident occurred after the aircraft, set to travel to Rome, took off from Logan International Airport (BOS) on Tuesday, June 15, 2010, according to information provided by TheBostonChannel.com.

Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) officials stated an Airbus 330 plane took off from the Boston airport before 6 p.m. Alitalia flight 615 was scheduled to fly to Rome but had to turn around after one of the jet’s engines caught fire.

The pilot subsequently contacted the airport control tower, asserting, “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday… We have one engine failed.” The pilot then warned air traffic controllers that he was about to make an emergency landing.

According to an unidentified passenger aboard the airplane, “As soon as we took off, there were a couple of very strong explosions. And I was on the side, so I could see a little bit of fire.”

“The poor kids were crying, you know, the little kids. That is what I was afraid of—the little kids. They were all crying because it was quite a shock,” another passenger stated.

Some passengers aboard the plane reportedly said the pilot alleged the incident occurred after the aircraft struck a bird. No injuries were reported after the episode. All passengers and crew members were placed in hotel rooms after the Tuesday evening incident.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are expected to investigate the aviation-related incident.
