San Mateo, CA—A 52-year-old Redwood City man walked onto the railroad tracks near 16th Avenue, where he was hit and killed by a Caltrain. About 5:15 p.m., on Monday, June 14, 2010, he was killed, just north of the Hayward Park station, as reported by the San Jose Mercury News.
A southbound train No. 266 was reportedly traveling at 55 mph when it slammed into the man, who was originally thought to be a woman, as he stood on the tracks for unknown reasons. Officials have yet to determine what the man was doing on the tracks.
The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Charles Grant Fulk.
Donald Graham, a witness to the accident, said he was walking his dog near the railroad tracks when he saw Fulk walk from behind an oak tree and towards the tracks as the train approached.
Fulk decided to flag down a nearby police officer, but it was too late. By the time the officer and Graham could reach him, the train had already struck and killed him.
Seven San Mateo police cruisers, San Mateo County transit police and the San Mateo Fire Department all responded to the incident.
A full investigation is currently underway.
