June 16, 2010 — The U.S. Government has dedicated $10.3 million in funding for assistance to help the Kyrgyz people cope with the current tragic situation. This assistance includes urgently needed medical supplies, small community assistance projects, food and agricultural assistance and support for the upcoming elections. We will be announcing additional assistance in the coming days.
The U. S. Government, along with other international donors, is making plans for safe distribution of food and supplies, including medical supplies where they are most needed. The United States supports statements by OSCE and the United Nations officials that the situation in southern Kyrgyzstan must be stabilized sufficiently for the safe delivery and distribution of supplies as soon as possible. The United States is working closely with Kyrgyzstan’s Provisional Government in order to coordinate the safe and effective distribution of aid using aircraft or other means, as soon as this is possible.
