Norcross, GA—Comverge Inc. and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the voluntary recall of the programmable thermostat communication module inside TXU energy thermostats on Thursday, June 17, 2010. The safety recall was initiated after it was discovered that the product could pose fire hazards to consumers.

Norcross, Georgia-based Comverge issued the recall after receiving 10 reports of overheating in the communication module. Such instances of overheating left thermostats damaged. One incident even resulted in smoke damage to the consumer’s wall. The company has not been informed of any injuries linked to the defective product.

According to the CPSC, “This recall involves Comverge communication modules inside programmable thermostats sold by TXU Energy with a serial number between 1015857 and 1022518. The serial number can be found on the top of the thermostat’s plastic housing. The thermostats have “TXU Energy” and “White Rodgers” printed on the front faceplate.”

The TXU Energy thermostats with the built-in programmable thermostat communication modules were manufactured in Mexico and sold by TXU Energy. The thermostats were made available to customers in North Texas. It was not specified if the recall affected consumers elsewhere. About 6,300 units are subject to the recall.

Consumers have been urged to contact Comverge to receive a complimentary replacement communication module. The company is reportedly contacting all known owners of the defective communication modules. The firm also advised consumers NOT to attempt to replace or disable the product.

For additional information concerning the product safety recall, Comverge can be reached toll-free at (866) 277-7001 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT. Consumers may also feel free to visit the company’s Web site at www.comverge.com/recall.
