Richmond, VA—A man suffered critical injuries after a drunken game took a turn for the worse around 3 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2010. A 21-year-old male and several friends were attempting to jump rooftop to rooftop along Richmond’s North Boulevard when the incident occurred, according to information provided by WTVR.
Reports stated David Deprez and a few unidentified friends used a ladder to climb to the top of a three-story building along North Boulevard. Upon doing so, they jumped from the top of 9 North Boulevard to the roof of 7 North Boulevard without injury.
When Deprez attempted to jump back to the top of 9 North Boulevard, where a ladder was awaiting his safe descent, he failed to land on the roof. He unfortunately fell to the pavement below, suffering extensive head and internal injuries on impact.
“I was sleeping and I heard a crash so I looked out my window… My roommate looked out and saw legs sticking up and called 911,” Marissa Marklevitz, a nearby resident who heard the incident from her apartment said.
Marklevitz and her roommate rushed downstairs to tend to the injured man as emergency crews made their way to the scene. She reportedly spoke with a 911 operator, who instructed as she took preliminary steps to help the injured man.
“He wasn’t even breathing. There was a pile of weird gelatinous blood stuff that he was breathing in, so I pushed it away and then he started breathing… Somebody had to do it, it’s a crazy situation. It’s never good to see someone bleeding out from their head… They’re really nice kids, just all of a sudden something like this happens,” Marklevitz added.
The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) student was taken to a Richmond-area hospital, where he remained in critical condition as of Thursday morning. It was unknown whether the victim suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a result of the steep fall.
While criminal charges are not expected, police maintained the fact that rooftops should not be regarded as a safe place to fool around.
