Salem, OR—A South Salem High School student is in critical condition at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland after he was Tased by an Oregon State Police (OSP) officer. The 16-year-old was reportedly involved in an altercation with an officer during a federal drug investigation when he was Tased, as reported by the Statesman Journal.

According to the OSP, on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at about 6:00 a.m., state police SWAT members were in locations around Salem, serving search warrants as part of a narcotics investigation. While the officers were serving the warrants, they happened to run into 16-year-old Steven Avila, who then resisted the officer’ attempts to arrest him. OSP Senior Trooper Jeromy Hasenkamp then hit Avila with a Taser, but instead of giving up, Avila continued to resist the officers. For a few minutes, Avila was unconscious.

A SWAT medic and Salem Fire Department paramedics treated Avila before he was rushed to the hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Hasenkamp has been placed on modified duty status, which is standard when an officer is involved in a use-of-force investigation.

The Salem Police Department ad the Marion County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident.
