Springfield, IL—The Subway sandwich chain apologized on Tuesday, June 22, 2010, for an outbreak of salmonella in 47 restaurants throughout 28 Illinois counties. The Illinois Department of Health (IDPH) confirmed 97 cases of Salmonella Hvittingfoss. Subway is currently working with IDPH officials to determine source of the salmonella contamination, according to information provided by Reuters.
Spokesperson Kelly Jakubek of the Department of Health confirmed 97 cases of the rare strain of salmonella on Monday, noting that while 26 victims were hospitalized, no fatalities were reported. Jakubek reported the food poisoning took place between May 11 and June 5.
Subway reportedly discarded all lettuce, green peppers, red onion and tomatoes from Illinois-based restaurants upon receiving notification of the foodborne illness outbreak. The items were subsequently replaced with new produce to prevent further illnesses.
“We are truly sorry for the difficulty this situation has caused you, our consumer, and are working diligently to solve this mystery and regain your trust… We are confident the current fresh produce being served in Subway restaurants are safe to eat,” Subway declared in a statement.
Subway is owned by Doctor’s Associates Inc. It one of the largest U.S. restaurant chains, with more than 28,500 locations within 86 countries.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is estimated that about 76 million people are plagued by foodborne illnesses annually. Approximately 5,000 of those cases prove fatal.
