Houston, TX—A zip-line accident in Splendora killed a man after the cable malfunctioned and he fell almost head-first into the hard ground below. The fatal accident occurred on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at a small Splendora lake at the end of Midline Road, as reported by KHOU.com.
According to officials, the victim and a group of other young adults were swimming at the lake, and enjoying the zip-line cable that ran across the one-acre lake. The cable is fastened to trees at both ends of the lake.
The victim, Kevin Burgess, 23, reportedly climbed 30 feet up one of the trees to retrieve the handles for the cables. As he took off from one of the trees to head to the other side, the cable malfunctioned. The cable then began to hang which caused Burgess to fall. He fell almost head-first.
Burgess’ friends loaded him into the back of an SUV and rushed to get help. The friends called EMS, who met them at the intersection of Highway 59 at Fostoria. At 4 p.m., EMS crews arrived at the scene and pronounced Burgess dead.
Burgess sustained fatal head injuries. An autopsy is scheduled at Southeast Forensic Center in Conroe.
