To kick off its second season, DIY Network’s “House Crashers” is taking the show on the road. Producers engaged Westmont based J Stanulis Architects to design their first project in Chicago. Tune in July 8 to see how the husband and wife team of Jeremy and Christa Stanulis add a touch of contemporary elegance to a Chicago Bungalow.
Reality show ‘House Crashers’ style of ambush renovation magnifies the challenges of traditional renovations in that the entire transformation must happen in three days. Scoping out Chicagoland hardware stores, the DIY network team found willing participants in newlyweds, Brian and Ashley Riordan. Brian, a Skokie Fireman, and Ashley, a second-grade teacher, purchased their home last year.
With a small living room and no real dining room, their Chicago bungalow was not conducive to all the entertaining the couple likes to do. The ‘House Crashers’ team worked with J Stanulis Architects to reprogram their existing space by removing walls, installing new finishes, and designing custom furniture pieces to showcase their new entertainment space. The entire team then set out with the Riordan’s and their extended family to bring the plans to fruition.
“It was great seeing the homeowner’s reactions as the space came together,” said Christa. “As a young couple with tastes on the more contemporary side, Brian and Ashley were very open to all of the new and somewhat unconventional finishes we proposed.”
Jeremy and Christa tapped into their network of material and trade specialist resources across the country for the unique materials featured on the show, but found some of their materials very close to home. “We really appreciated our local Westmont Fire Department getting in on the action,” said Jeremy. “They were excited to donate materials for a custom furniture piece which we built on the show. The furniture build really became a personal part of the experience not only for the home owners but for their whole family. The family worked hard to understand our vision and help to execute it. The result was stunning. “
The show airs at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 8, during DIY Network’s ‘Crash Week.’
