Mason City, IA—A car explosion during the demolition derby at the Worth County Fair left a Minnesota man severely burned, all while his young son watched from the stands. The explosion occurred on Sunday night, June 27, 2010 at about 8 p.m., when the Blue Earth, Minn. man’s car collided head-on with another car, as reputed by WCFCourier.com.
Matt Ertman was completely engulfed in flames when his brother and a friend pulled him from the burning wreckage. He was airlifted to University Hospital in Iowa City for treatment of burns to his face, arms and torso. His condition is currently unknown.
Ertman’s son tragically had to watch the horrifying scene from the sidelines as his uncle pulled his father from the wreckage.
The car’s fuel tank apparently exploded, causing the blazing inferno.
Ertman’s friend, Dustin Olson said, “The flames just went in all directions. He was on fire and his helmet was smoking.”
A witness, Greg Heidecker of Lakota stated,” There should have been somebody there with fire extinguishers or something. If his brother hadn’t gotten to him, he would have been killed, that’s for sure.”
The fair continued uninterrupted. It was not reported if police officers would be investigating the incident.
