St. Louis, MO– A worker is in critical condition at St. Louis University Hospital after falling three stories down an elevator shaft at the old Lemp Brewery in St. Louis. Firefighters responded to the call at around 9:30 a.m., at the brewery located at 3500 Lemp, as reported by KSDK.
The worker was reportedly waiting for an elevator to reach him so that he could take it down to the ground floor, but when the door opened he step forward, not realizing the platform wasn’t there. He then plummeted 30 feet to the ground below.
Officials identified the worker as 28-year-old Mike Gainer, who is employed by True North Wireless.
Responding emergency medical crews rushed Gainer to St. Louis University Hospital in critical condition.
St. Louis Fire Captain Michael Pickett stated that a malfunction prompted the doors to open. If the elevator is not there, the doors are not supposed to open.
Gainer was reportedly doing some work in Building 4 when the accident occurred.
A full investigation is underway. Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to arrive at the scene to conduct a full investigation into the accident.
