Obesity raises risks of cancer death in Asia-Pacific

07/02/2010 // US // Get Cancer Answers // News Desk

US – A new study suggests obesity may raise the risks of cancer deaths for people in the Asia-Pacific region. As reported by HealthDay News, researchers found that overweight or obese adults from the region in the study had a six and twenty-one percent higher chance (respectively) of dying from cancer, than those who were of normal weight.

Christine Parr, from the University of Oslo in Norway, and international colleagues, are quoted in the report as writing in their report of a need for “effective strategies to prevent the increasing proportions of overweight and obese people in Asian populations … to reduce the burden of cancer that can be expected if the obesity epidemic continues.”

More information about the study may be available in the June 29 online publication of The Lancet Oncology.
